Mary and Her Monster | Bakken Museum

Mary and Her Monster

This audacious and fascinating young woman from the early 1800's challenged conventions, overcame obstacles, and found inspiration in the art, culture and science of her time. Her novel Frankenstein was published when she was just 21 years old.

The exhibit features interactive experiences that create an immersive environment where curious minds of all ages can learn about Mary’s life. See Mary's magic bookcase filled with artifacts and books from The Bakken collection, solve the puzzle of Frankenstein's story illustrated by artist Zak Sally,  and meet a living portrait of Mary that allows visitors to hear about the people, science, art and culture that inspired her.

Mary and Her Monster serves as a companion to the popular Frankenstein’s Laboratory exhibit loved by children and adults alike, and coincides with the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “waking dream” that inspired her to write the novel.
